Hockey and the Brain
Hockey season is well under way, but making headlines this week was young hockey star, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins finally returned to the ice after 10 months away. In a game against the Washington Capitals he suffered a nasty concussion, with fears he might not play again. Amazingly enough he came back to score two goals and have two assists. As a result of his injuries a lot of attention has been drawn to concussions and how they affect hockey players.
2011 has been a rough year for the NHL. My brother and sister went to high school with Rick Rypien, a Winnipeg Jets' player, who committed suicide in August. Rick was known to have bouts of depression. My sister and I were on vacation together talking about the Vancouver Canuck's tribute Rick when we read about Wade Belak, another enforcer for the Nashville Predators who also died. Before all this New York Rangers' forward Derek Boogaard was found dead in his Minneapolis home due to a drug and alcohol overdose.
Mind Alive's Audio Visual Entrainment Technology has been used in the NHL before by the Toronto Maple Leafs and more than ever it could help young players manage symptoms brought on by brain injuries, stress or depressed mood.
