Anxiety Over the Holidays
What is it about Christmas that heightens our anxiety? Is it the financial burden, obligatory family get togethers or the hustle and bustle of cooking, cleaning and shopping? In reality, these pressures are with us daily and it may be the pressure of a December 25th deadline that allows these anxieties to surface. Maybe we need the 25th as a release date. Phew !!! We made it through the holidays and our bodies, which have been harbouring anxiety all year long, can finally return to normal. That something seems to work in the short term, does not always mean that the longer term effects are also beneficial.
Positive fantasies seem harmless but, as it seems, they are likely to lead to inactivity and feelings of depression later on.
But can we stop fantasizing positively? It is so tempting and easy and it does make us feel better instantly. The solution appears to be the following:
positive fantasies can make us feel better in the short term but have to be combined with another intervention in order to prevent us form feeling worse later on.
